From the start, the game was played very combatively and fiercely, with as many as three yellow cards seen in the first 10 minutes. However, in the 14th minute, there was a brief interruption of the match. Velež fans set off flares in front of their stand, and as the fire began to spread, referee Dragan Petrović had to halt the game. The fire brigade intervened and extinguished the flames.
When the match resumed, both teams missed opportunities. The biggest chance for the visitors was missed by Nemanja Bilbija with a shot wide of Velež's goal, while the hosts had several clear-cut chances. Bilbija missed a sitter in the 30th minute but scored a goal 10 minutes later, a very nice header.
Although there were only five minutes left until halftime, the home team had two sitters. First, Ivan Šarić rounded Zrinjski's goalkeeper but hit the post, and then deep into stoppage time, Đani Salčin shot wide from a few meters out. The score remained unchanged until the break, staying 1:0 in favor of the visitors.
The hosts missed a third sitter in the 48th minute. Andro Babić, unmarked from about ten meters out, shot over Zrinjski's goal. This situation seemed better than a penalty. The continuation of the home team's incredible misses was seen in the 63rd minute, this time with Salčin hitting the post.
Until the end of the match, there were several more chances on both sides, but no further goals, so Zrinjski takes the three precious points from their visit to their biggest rival. With this victory, Zrinjski solidified their second place and is six points behind the leading Borac, but with one more game played. Velež remained in fourth place but could be overtaken by Široki Brijeg in this round.
In the next round, Zrinjski will visit Sarajevo, while Velež will host Sloga. Both teams also have commitments in the semifinals of the BiH Cup during the week.
Result and scorer: Velež - Zrinjski 0:1 (Bilbija 40')
