One of the best things that spring brings, along with plenty of sunlight, is the ability to open windows without fear of the cold. In such cases, you might notice a stale smell beginning to spread in your home. An expert explained to Real Simple what lies behind such unpleasant odors and ways to keep your home fresh.

"Odors are primarily influenced by heat and humidity. During winter, due to poor air circulation, unpleasant smells from wooden floors, walls, carpets, furniture, and heating and ventilation systems linger in the space," said cleaning expert Ed Quinlan.

Soft surfaces pose a particular problem. Carpets and various fabrics trap particles in their fibers and provide a large surface area where odors easily cling. Additionally, pet dander, urine, and dirt brought in from outside can encourage bacterial growth and intensify unpleasant smells. Although these odors go unnoticed during winter, with the arrival of warmer days and more frequent ventilation, they become more pronounced.

This is noticeable in homes with dark and damp areas, such as basements or hard-to-reach spaces under floors, where conditions are favorable for mold growth. To prevent such odors from forming, it is recommended to vacuum at least twice a week with a vacuum cleaner equipped with microfiltration.

"Replace the bag when it is no more than two-thirds full to maintain optimal suction power," advises Quinlan.

Also, depending on how much your home is used, professional carpet cleaning once a year is recommended. Promptly cleaning up pet accidents, spills, and other dirt prevents odors from penetrating soft surfaces.

Regardless of the season, you can also apply the German method of ventilating spaces by briefly but intensively opening windows. The idea is to open windows wide for five to ten minutes once or twice a day so that fresh air circulates quickly and improves indoor air quality.

"This is an excellent way to remove stale air and maintain freshness throughout the year," claims Quinlan.

When windows are closed for weeks or months, the air in the space does not circulate sufficiently, causing odors to become stale.

Air purifiers can help improve indoor air quality and contribute to a fresher-smelling home in the long term. Quinlan emphasizes that regular home maintenance is most important, as it is key to welcoming spring without unpleasant, stale odors.
