An unscrupulous driver of an Audi Q5 registered in Maryland has accumulated a total of 893 fines, amounting to $262,204 that must be paid. Washington police have finally taken action, specifically the Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Department of Public Works, which seized the vehicle.
The police stated that the owner showed "repeated disregard for traffic laws" and promised to continue addressing those who commit repeated traffic violations.
However, the police response has not been without criticism, as many question how he was allowed to commit so many offenses before being penalized, especially since the city is covered by cameras.
The 2024 STEER Act has finally given authorities more power to address the issue of drivers from Maryland and Virginia who ignore fines in Washington. Since the law took effect, officials say traffic fatalities in the District have dropped by 52 percent.
The city has also obtained judgments against multiple repeat offenders and collected over $500,000 in previously unpaid fines.
