In their message, the bishops of the Bishops' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina, among other things, convey that in a time marked by tensions, conflicts, uncertainties, and many divisions, the Easter message calls us to return to the source of true peace.
Often we, like the disciples after Good Friday, lock ourselves in the spaces of our own fears, insecurities, and disappointments. Yet it is precisely into such closed spaces of our lives that the risen Christ comes. His presence illuminates the darkness of the heart, restores lost trust, and grants a peace that frees us from the paralysis of fear. The encounter with the Risen One enables us not to be people of despair, but people of hope—those who, in the light of the resurrection, know how to recognize the possibility of a new beginning and who are ready to build bridges of reconciliation where divisions threaten.
For centuries, the Christian faith has drawn strength from this indestructible truth. Throughout history, the Church has continually contemplated Christ's resurrection as a source of light for each new generation of believers. In it, we recognize God's decisive and enduring "yes" to humanity and to life. The risen Lord confirms that love does not cease and that good has the final word. There is no darkness so deep that God's light cannot illuminate it, nor any wound that His grace cannot heal. Therefore, Easter remains the enduring foundation of our hope and the strength that guides us through all the challenges of the times.
The message of the bishops of the BK BiH states that Easter is not only a feast we celebrate in liturgical worship; it is a lasting call to a new way of life.
"The encounter with the risen Christ does not end in the joy of Easter morning but continues in the daily lives of those who believe in His victory over death. The risen Lord sends His disciples to be witnesses of His peace in the world. This call begins in the closest spaces of our lives: in our own hearts, in our families, in parish communities, in workplaces, and in the society we live in. Where the spirit of the Gospel is lived, there Christ's peace becomes a tangible force that changes relationships among people and opens the way to new hope.
Our homeland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, carries a deep experience of wounded history, but at the same time a strong longing for peace, justice, and mutual trust. Precisely for this reason, the Easter message holds particular strength and responsibility for us. Christ's peace is not a sign of weakness nor an escape from reality; it is a strength that has the power to transform human hearts. It is a peace that does not remain silent in the face of injustice but heals it through forgiveness, tearing down walls of alienation and uniting us as one human family. It teaches us to see in others not an opponent or a stranger, but a brother and sister with whom we share the same human journey and the same dignity as children of God," states the joint message of the bishops.
Easter, they convey, reminds us that Christian hope is not naive optimism nor mere expectation of better circumstances. It is a deep trust in God, who guides history and never abandons humanity.
The risen Christ stands at the beginning of every new beginning. Where a person opens themselves to God and to their neighbor, there a "new spring" of life is born: trust is renewed, solidarity is strengthened, and hope is reawakened that it is possible to build a more just and humane world. Therefore, Easter always calls us anew to be people of Easter hope—people who believe that good triumphs and who are ready to confirm this faith through acts of love and reconciliation.
"With united hearts, we direct our prayers to the risen Jesus, that the light of Easter morning may illuminate our lives and light the path we walk as believers and as a people. In these circumstances of fragile peace and present conflicts, we pray that His quiet yet powerful light may enter this world, our families, our communities, and our homeland. We pray that where shadows of fear, distrust, or indifference loom, the strength of faith and the warmth of mutual closeness may shine again. While we celebrate the victory of life over death, we are aware that Easter joy is not a fleeting feeling of one day but a gift that accompanies and shapes us throughout the entire year.
The risen Christ calls us to be bearers of His peace and witnesses of hope in a world that yearns for reconciliation and new trust. May He grant us the wisdom of heart to recognize the path of good and the strength to walk it steadfastly, guided by faith that carries us even through the greatest trials of the times.
May the joy of Easter fill your hearts, homes, and families, and may the peace of the risen Lord accompany and strengthen you in every day of life. Happy and blessed Easter!" convey Tomo Vukšić, Archbishop of Vrhbosna and Metropolitan; Msgr. Petar Palić, Bishop of Mostar-Duvno and Apostolic Administrator of Trebinje-Mrkan; Msgr. Željko Majić, Bishop of Banja Luka; and Msgr. Miro Relota, Military Ordinary in BiH.
