Only a handful of Catholic believers attended the Mass, which is unsurprising given that the Catholic community in Goražde is small in number but exceptionally active and dedicated. Parish priest Don Josip Tadić plays a special role in preserving spiritual life, gathering the faithful through his actions and sending strong messages of community and solidarity.
"The community is indeed small, but it is full of spirit, faith, and hope for a better tomorrow. We are never alone; someone always visits us, and they gladly come to Mass. Today, medical students from Foča and friends of this parish are with us," says Don Josip.
In his Easter message, Father Tadić reminded that the meaning of this holiday is reflected not only in faith but also in the daily struggle of individuals to find light in moments of darkness.
A Small but Valuable Community
"Our Lord Jesus Christ has risen, and today is our greatest holiday, our greatest celebration of Jesus' resurrection, which gives us hope for a better tomorrow. What we go through in life, what we hope for, and the goal we are directed toward is precisely this day," the priest conveyed.
Speaking about the symbolism of Easter morning, he emphasized how hope is often born precisely in moments of confusion, fear, and uncertainty, just as experienced by the first witnesses of the empty tomb. He particularly highlighted the contemporary context, reminding of the suffering and pain of people worldwide.
"I especially think of people in regions affected by war and suffering, including those in the Middle East, where daily life often carries the burden of pain, injustice, and uncertainty," Tadić said.
The message of Easter, as he stated, is not an escape from reality but a call to recognize 'the seeds of new life' within it, even when all doors seem closed.
In a powerful and vivid story about a boy lighting up a dark valley with small lanterns, the priest conveyed the essence of the Easter message to the faithful: that even the smallest act of kindness can initiate change and bring light where it is least present. In a time of divisions, uncertainties, and daily challenges, the message from the small Goražde chapel resonates far beyond its walls, as a reminder that hope, understanding, and humanity always have the final word.
"Happy Easter to all who celebrate it, with the wish that in everyday life we be bearers of light to one another," says Tonka Matović.
She rejoices in every visit to Mass, as well as all the preparations that preceded this day.
"There were great preparations for six weeks; fasting and doing good deeds were required. Easter is a holiday that gives us strength in all trials. I wish everyone who celebrates according to the new and old calendar, and all our citizens of Goražde, happiness for all 365 days to live in peace, love, and health, and everything else will be the best. The holiday of hope and remembrance of Jesus' sufferings—what He endured—so when times are hard for us, we remember His sufferings, and it becomes easier for us. People have somehow drifted apart, the older generation has passed away, and I wish peace and love to our dear people of Goražde and all people of this world. Jesus is only peace and only love, and all positivity can be inherited from Jesus," Tonka conveys.
Although small, the Catholic community holds special significance beyond this city. Goražde is increasingly visited by Catholic believers from around the world, particularly due to the memory of the Drina Martyrs, whose suffering during World War II left a deep mark. The Vatican has declared them blessed, and they are celebrated by the Catholic Church worldwide, while Catholic pilgrims visit Goražde on this occasion to offer prayers at the site of their martyrdom. In their honor, the Church of the Drina Martyrs was erected, which has become a place of prayer and pilgrimage.
