Michael Jackson is back in the spotlight, this time on the silver screen. The upcoming biographical film from Lionsgate, titled "Michael," brings a portrayal of the King of Pop's life offstage, as well as some of the most famous performances from his early solo career.

"I never dreamed of being an actor nor did I think about playing him, but I knew it was a calling. Embodying Michael, I really had to earn the role and prove to the filmmakers that I was capable of becoming Michael. Actually, it was about starting from the roots and finding authenticity," said Jaafar.

Director Antoine Fuqua emphasized how the choice was special.

"It's incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to mimic Michael and such great chemistry with the camera," revealed Fuqua.

The film follows Jackson's rise to fame, including the period when he performed with his brothers in the group Jackson 5. The role of young Michael is played by Juliano Krue Valdi, while Colman Domingo plays Joe Jackson, the family's father. Katherine Jackson is portrayed by Nia Long, who described her character as a strong and important family support.

"As a mother, she was selfless and endured forces beyond her control, yet she managed to help build an immense legacy. I am honored to bring her voice to the screen and share Michael Jackson's story with audiences worldwide," stated Long.

According to the official synopsis, the film delivers an exciting and honest portrayal of a brilliant but complicated man who became the King of Pop, showcasing his triumphs and tragedies, personal struggles, but also undeniable talent.

The screenplay was written by John Logan, and it is produced by Graham King, known for his work on the award-winning film "Bohemian Rhapsody."

The official trailer was released in February 2026 and brings the first footage of Jaafar in the role of Michael, including reconstructions of his iconic performances.

The film has received support from Jackson's family, including his mother Katherine, who stated that Jaafar plays her son. Production began in early 2024, and filming concluded in May of the same year.
