This ticket sale secured the film the title of the biggest global debut of the year, surpassing "Project Hail Mary," the space story from Amazon MGM Studios, which in March earned $33.1 million in North America and a total of $97.2 million worldwide.
The initial results of the new Super Mario film nearly matched the success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from 2023, which grossed $375 million globally in the same period and later reached a total of $1.3 billion.
According to Universal Pictures, the "Super Mario" franchise is the only animated series with two titles achieving a global opening greater than $350 million.
The new "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" thus ranks among the biggest animated debuts in Hollywood history, just behind "Zootopia 2," "Moana 2," and "Super Mario Bros. Movie," and represents one of the studio's most successful launches.
The film's production cost $110 million and was released in 80 international markets. The highest interest was recorded in Mexico ($29 million), the United Kingdom and Ireland ($19.7 million), Germany ($15 million), and France ($12 million).
The film also achieved great popularity in IMAX formats, earning $22.2 million, making it the second-best global opening in the company's history for a Hollywood premiere. This surpassed the debut of "Super Mario Bros. Movie," which earned $21.4 million in IMAX.
On the other hand, "Project Hail Mary" also recorded significant success in IMAX theaters, with a total revenue of $73.6 million, including an additional five million dollars over the past weekend.
The film continues steady revenue growth, earning $42.1 million in 86 international markets during its third weekend of screening, with a ticket sales drop of only 23 percent compared to the previous week.
To date, it has grossed a total of $203.6 million in the American market and $420.7 million globally. This also represents the first major commercial success for Amazon MGM Studios, following the failures of "Melania" and "Crime 101."
According to industry estimates, "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary" are expected to dominate the box office for most of April, until the release of "Michael," a biographical story about Michael Jackson, which arrives at the end of the month.
