Namely, Ulster University organized a ceremonial reception and awarded an honorary doctorate to a Hollywood star who later built a political career. The recognition was presented to him for his contributions to public service, advocacy for environmental protection, and the arts.
Speaking at the event, Schwarzenegger highlighted that his first visit to Belfast in 1966 was a turning point in his life because it was the first time he spoke in public. He recalled that he did not know English at the time and almost fainted when he was asked to address the audience at a bodybuilding competition. With the help of the host, he managed to utter a few words, and the audience rewarded him with applause.
"What happened that day in Belfast was very important to me because every time after that, after winning a competition, I approached the microphone. Each time, I spoke more and more and more, and in the end, they couldn't silence meโI love speaking in public so much," he reminisced.
His first visit to Northern Ireland in 1966 was at the invitation of a local bodybuilding judge. Without money, the then-unknown athlete stayed overnight at the host's house in Dundonald, where, as recounted, he was treated to a traditional meal.
During the ceremony, Schwarzenegger also joked that he was "tricked" into returning to Belfast after a video call with university representatives a few months ago.
"When they asked me if I still believe in freedom of speech, I replied that I do. They then said, 'Good, you will give a speech on March 30th in Belfast.' So, they tricked me; I couldn't get out of it anymore," Schwarzenegger laughed.
