The responsibility for the hack has been claimed by the hacker group ShinyHunters, which is linked to data breaches at companies like Microsoft, Google, Ticketmaster, and others. The group posted a message on its website with a final warning to Rockstar to "pay up" or the "data will be released." ShinyHunters did not detail which Rockstar data they accessed, only stating that the company has until April 14 to respond or the group will publish the compromised information, which would lead to "several frustrating (digital) problems." Rockstar Games confirmed that a hack occurred and noted that "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed," but the incident "did not impact the organization or players." Previously, Rockstar faced a major hack that led to a data leak, including numerous clips and content from the game "Grand Theft Auto VI." Following that 2022 hack, an 18-year-old member of the Lapsus$ group responsible for the leak was sentenced to "indefinite hospitalization."
