The most autocratic leader of the European Union and a close ally of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hand over power to his opponent, Péter Magyar. Orbán tearfully conceded defeat shortly after Magyar posted on Facebook at 21:12: "Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just called us to congratulate us on the victory." Magyar secured a two-thirds majority that will allow him to dismantle key features of Orbán's "illiberal democracy," writes Politico. This includes abolishing the prime minister's tight control over the judiciary, state companies, and media. Orbán's departure will come as a major relief to the European Union, whose systemic weaknesses he has long exposed and exploited, recently helping Putin by blocking €90 billion in European aid to Ukraine. Officials in Brussels have long accused Orbán of undermining the foundations of Hungarian democracy and aiding Putin in blocking crucial aid to Kyiv, but the EU has largely failed to curb his influence. The heavy defeat of the Hungarian prime minister will also deal a painful blow to Trump's MAGA movement, which saw the Hungarian leader as a model for its own brand of anti-immigrant, Christian-oriented nationalism. Even several private messages of support from Trump, backed by visits from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, failed to reverse the race's outcome. The election was shaped by growing public dissatisfaction with Hungary's faltering economy and the corruption and nepotism associated with Orbán.
