Namely, he revealed that the key moment occurred during his stay in rehabilitation, when he had an emotional and painful conversation with his mother via video call. He spoke about his recovery journey recently during a stand-up performance in Las Vegas. "I went to rehab this time and told myself: 'Now I'm really going to do it properly, to stop spending the money I earn on getting clean,'" recounted the 32-year-old Davidson. Speaking about the treatment process, he also recalled the so-called "family week," which he described as one of the most difficult experiences. "That's the part where over Zoom, together with a therapist, you talk with your family, and they tell you how hard it is for them to watch you do drugs," he explained. It was precisely during one such conversation with his mother Amy that the turning point came. "I remember my mom appeared on the screen and said: 'Peter, it's really hard to be your mom. It's not an easy job at all,'" recalled Davidson, a former member of Saturday Night Live. He added that at that moment, he was not yet completely stable and initially reacted defiantly. "I thought: 'Well, you're not that special. What are you even doing?'" he said. However, the words that followed hit him hard and forced a change. "She said: 'I've had enough.' That completely broke me. She said: 'Peter, it's hard to be your mom because every morning I wake up with the fear that I'll turn on the news and see that my son has died,'" Davidson said. He also emphasized the irony of the whole situation, pointing out that his mother was telling him all this from the house he bought with the money he earned while struggling with addiction. "She told me all of that over Zoom from the house I bought her while I was on drugs. Then I thought: 'Well, someone here has really settled in comfortably.' It sobered me up," he said. Davidson is the son of Amy and Scott Davidson, a firefighter who died during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, in New York. Today, he particularly emphasizes how much being sober means to him, especially since he has since become a father. He and his girlfriend Elsie Hewitt welcomed their daughter Scottie Rose in December of last year. "Thank God I'm sober," Davidson said on the podcast This Past Weekend in September 2025, shortly before his daughter's birth. "I wish I had been sober longer, because at that point it had only been a little over a year, but I'm very grateful that it happened now and with Elsie. In some earlier relationships, or when I was addicted and mentally very unstable, if it had been my goal. I would tell myself: 'I have to have a child. I have to get married,' because that's how I grew up," he said. Looking back, he admits that he was not ready for family life at that time. "I stopped dating women and told myself: 'I need to get my act together and become a person who can even have a healthy relationship,'" he revealed. He added that during that period, he was not actively seeking a relationship nor planning to have a child. "I wasn't looking for a relationship or trying to have a child. Everything just happened all at once and it was wonderful," he said. He also highlighted that the arrival of his daughter completely changed his priorities. "The best way I can describe it is that Scottie is the greatest gift," he told Us Weekly in January of this year, speaking about adjusting to parenthood.
