Footage taken on March 29 shows large sections of the aircraft's central fuselage destroyed in the attack, while its distinctive rotating radar dome, which is normally mounted on top of the plane, can be seen on the ground. Several vehicles are visible around the damaged aircraft.
The same footage shows two more E-3 Sentry aircraft parked in the open at the airbase, indicating they were not moved to shelters for at least two days after the attack. One of these aircraft was located less than 1,300 meters from the destroyed E-3.
Several other aircraft, including refueling tankers and E-2 Hawkeye reconnaissance planes, are also seen unprotected in the satellite image.
AWACS provides air surveillance over 310,000 square kilometers of combat space, from the ground up to the stratosphere, and has been a vital component of U.S. combat forces for decades.
