Bosnia and Herzegovina national team player Nikola Vasilj was once again in the spotlight, this time due to a major mistake and an outstanding reaction that redeemed him.
Vasilj poorly cleared the ball from the penalty area straight to the feet of András Schäfer, practically gifting a chance to the home side. However, he immediately corrected his error, first saving Schäfer's attempt and then a dangerous shot from Oliver Burke in the 67th minute.
Up to that point, the Bosnian goalkeeper had been nearly flawless, and he had no realistic chance to intervene in the equalizing goal.
This is not the first time Vasilj has oscillated between brilliant moves and major blunders. He made a similar mistake in the recent World Cup playoff against Italy, when a misplaced pass led to an early deficit, although the Dragons ultimately celebrated after penalties (5:2).
This time, luck was on his side. After the match, Vasilj admitted that his focus led to good saves.
"At first, I couldn't believe it was happening. Then I stayed focused and saved the goal. I tried to find another solution because we were playing a lot of long balls, but it wasn't the smartest decision," Vasilj said, as reported by Bild.
Although his mistake could have cost the team dearly, Vasilj made several excellent saves during the match. Early in the game, he stopped an attempt by Danilho Doekhi, and later, dangerous shots from Burke and Fabian Köhn. He also stood out in the second half, often being a key player for his team.
One of the dramatic moments was when he was hit in the groin during one of the saves, but he commented on the situation with a joke.
"He didn't hit exactly in the center," our goalkeeper joked.
Ahead of him are new major challenges: playing in the World Cup and his private life, as he is soon expecting the birth of his first child. However, as he himself says, his focus is currently clear: ensuring St. Pauli's survival in the Bundesliga.
