According to studio estimates, the film earned $69 million from 4,284 theaters in the United States and Canada, bringing its domestic total to $308.1 million, while its global revenue surpassed $629 million.
This represents a 48% drop from its opening weekend, which is relatively moderate for a blockbuster. However, the gap between this film and the first installment continues to widen. By the second weekend of 2023, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which received much better reviews, had earned over $353 million in North America alone. Still, the sequel is considered a major hit, as the film's production cost only $110 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, a market trends expert at Comscore, believes the result is highly respectable.
"For a film to already cross $300 million, that's truly incredible. Reaching such cinematic milestones is even more impressive," said Dergarabedian, noting that most tickets were likely sold at lower prices for children.
The film also contributes to the growth of the box office ahead of the summer movie season, which begins in May.
The new film that opened last weekend, also from Universal, is the romantic comedy "You, Me & Tuscany," starring Halle Bailey and Regรฉ-Jean Page. The film debuted in fourth place with an estimated $8 million from 3,151 theaters, against a budget of $18 million. Women made up 80% of the audience.
The film received mixed but positive reviews. According to an Associated Press review, the film is "as fleeting and inconsequential as the foam on a good cappuccino." On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 68% rating from critics.
However, audiences seemed more satisfied. According to PostTrak exit polls, 77% of viewers said they would "definitely recommend" the film to friends. It also received an A- on CinemaScore.
Jim Orr, Universal's head of distribution in North America, emphasized that audience reactions "point to a very strong box office performance."
Second on the box office chart this week was "Project Hail Mary," which continued to post double-digit earnings in its fourth weekend. It earned $24.6 million from Friday to Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $256.7 million. Globally, it has earned $510.6 million.
"The Drama" took third place in its second weekend with $8.7 million. The buzzy A24 film about an engaged couple, starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, dropped only 38%, with its domestic total now at $30.8 million and its global revenue at $65 million.
Disney and Pixar's "Hoppers" finished in fifth place with $4.1 million in its sixth weekend. It has earned a total of $354.4 million globally.
Another highlight was the Japanese film adaptation of the video game "Exit 8," which earned $1.4 million from just 490 theaters, landing in seventh place. The film, directed by Genki Kawamura, holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
