Namely, on a flight traveling from Kingston, Jamaica to New York, specifically John F. Kennedy Airport, one of the passengers went into labor. The cabin turned into a delivery room, and the pilots requested an expedited landing from air traffic control.
"Descend and maintain 3,000, Caribbean 005, we now have a passenger giving birth, we would like to proceed direct to Zetal," said the pilot, according to an audio recording released to the public. The controller initially misunderstood the pilot and asked if there was a "sick passenger" on the plane.
"We have a passenger, a pregnant passenger who will soon start giving birth, we are requesting a direct course to Zetal," the pilot corrected him. The plane received clearance for a direct landing, and paramedics were already waiting at the exit.
"Kennedy Tower, Caribbean Airlines 005, descending through 22,000 to 20,000, direct to ZETAL, woman in labor on board," reported the pilot. The little boy was born on Caribbean Airlines flight 005.
"Tell her the baby has to be named Kennedy," creatively suggested the air traffic controller at JFK Airport to the new mother. After landing, the man on duty in the tower that day greeted the plane and inquired about the baby's condition.
"Caribbean five, ground here. Is it over?" asked the airport employee, and the pilot enthusiastically replied: "Yes, sir."
