As a true motorsport enthusiast, mechanic Vladimir Roman from ล id, Serbia, arrived in Croatia with his brother to follow the action, but he never imagined he would experience an unforgettable moment. He ended up helping a French crew repair their car so they could continue in the rally.
"My brother and I came to Croatia as early as Friday because we are huge fans of this motorsport. Both of us have been involved in motorsport for a long timeโhe has been both a driver and co-driver, participating in some rallies and hill climbs, while I have served as a mechanic. I am still an active mechanic in the drift team AS Racing of the well-known drifter Nikola Iliฤ 'Debeli.' We camped near the speed stages and enjoyed the action, and then something happened that I could never have imagined," Roman told the portal Klix.ba.
One of the crews in the Rally3 class had to stop beside the track due to a problem with their Ford Fiesta, and their luck was that Vladimir happened to be right there. With his expertise, he enabled them to continue driving.
"Everything happened on the first power stage of the final rally day. We were watching the cars pass by while eating when, two corners ahead of us, we heard a sound like a car running out of gas. Then the car stopped right in front of us, the crew got out and opened the hood to try to find the issue, but the engine was 'red-hot.' They probably donโt have much mechanical experience, as itโs not their job to know that. Then they asked the crowd if there was a mechanic among us, and I immediately reacted and offered help. Another man joined me, so we carried out the repair relatively quickly. The problem was with the serpentine belt, which for some reason had snapped and wrapped around the driveshaft, causing the car to lose power and power steering, making it impossible to drive and steer," said Roman.
Thus, he returned home from Croatia with an unforgettable experience.
"I didnโt think much about the fact that it was a rally car and that I was helping a crew during a race; I acted as I always would in everyday life. Only later did I realize what I had doneโit was truly a special feeling. Iโm glad my brother recorded everything; the video went viral online. The crew thanked us, and my heart is full," Roman concluded.
