Namely, following the elections held on April 12 in Hungary and the victory of the opposition Tisza party and Peter Magyar, the bookstore symbolically placed all books about Viktor Orban on the shelves where history books are located.
In this way, the bookstore conveyed in a clever manner what it thinks about Viktor Orban and his rule, and this very bookstore had often been targeted by the authorities over the years of Orban's governance.
This particularly applies to 2023, when the bookstore chain was fined about 31,500 euros. This was done because of one of the children's books that was placed on the shelf containing youth literature.
What the authorities found contentious was an illustration that promoted homosexuality.
"The books in question depict homosexuality, yet they are classified among books intended for children and categorized as youth literature, and they were not distributed in closed packaging," stated the government office at the time.
This case also reached its epilogue in court, and the bookstore won the case due to a comma in the law.
Namely, the provision of the government trade regulation stated that all products intended for children that depict homosexuality "may only be sold in closed packaging, separate from other products."
Since the legislator did not place a comma before the word "only" at the time, the sentence did not imply that it must be kept separately and in closed packaging, but rather that if the book is kept separate from others, it must be wrapped in special packaging.
After losing the case in court, the government amended the law and added a comma in the place that cost them the entire case.
