A video clip from a funeral held the previous day in the Liaoning region has spread across the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The footage shows an excavator lowering a black Mercedes-Benz S450L into a pit next to the grave. The car was adorned with red ribbons, and its license plate read "8888." Afterward, the vehicle was buried with soil.
It is noted that this Mercedes model sells for at least 1.1 million yuan (approximately 315,000 KM) in China. Particularly significant is that the number 8 is considered a symbol of wealth and fortune in China, so license plates like "8888" are estimated to be worth at least 100,000 yuan (around 28,000 KM). Internet users speculate that the car was buried as a "funeral object" to be interred along with the deceased's body.
Another clip recorded the deceased's family serving guests luxurious dishes such as lobster under a tent. Claims have also surfaced on social media that the host distributed "red envelopes" containing 500 yuan (about 140 KM) to each guest as a token of gratitude.
These scenes have become a major topic online. While some commented that this is a "true reflection of filial piety," others criticized the act, stating that it "could lead to soil and groundwater pollution" and represents excessive extravagance and abnormal burial culture. There were also humorous remarks, such as suggestions that the car might be stolen from the grave overnight.
