Experienced Maguire continues to play for Manchester United, and it seems he has recently reduced his mistakes and gained the trust of a good portion of the fans.
However, he has been through hell, which his mother suffered from the most. Zoe Maguire even had to speak out on social media, stating that it was "shameful and unacceptable abuse that goes far beyond the boundaries of football."
Zoe Maguire watched her son go through difficult periods for nearly two years and could no longer suffer in silence. He tried to dissuade her from posting on social media, but he failed.
"I didn't want that, but she just said: 'I'm doing it! I'm not listening to you!'" explains Maguire, who now goes through everything with a smile:
"I think it probably affects your family a bit more in those moments. They saw what we were going through and how tough it was. I think there are many players who might want to simply close the book, go somewhere else, and restart their careers. I think it would probably have broken them a bit earlier," he added.
He says he wouldn't change anything, as it's all part of the incredible journey he has been through.
"But I wouldn't change where I've been or what I've gone through. It's part of the journey. It has definitely strengthened me and brought me to where I am today," emphasizes Maguire.
Maguire celebrated his 33rd birthday last month and seems to be in the best physical shape of his life so far. He highlights that he expects much better things from United in the upcoming season.
"I feel the team is starting to look like a strong squad, but this summer will be big, really, really big. We need more players, we need better quality, we need players who will get into the starting lineup. Obviously, there is also a big decision regarding the manager," says Maguire, who, like the rest of the football world, doesn't know whether Michael Carrick will remain on the bench for the Red Devils.
