"This concerns members of parliament who are already personally and politically damaged and therefore at least have the right to defend themselves," Mitsotakis told Greek radio. EPPO has requested the lifting of immunity for numerous ministers and members of parliament from the ruling conservative party New Democracy (ND). They are accused of providing services to voters by securing illegal subsidies. The charges range from embezzlement to computer fraud and providing false information. The ministers of civil protection and agriculture have resigned, along with the deputy minister at the Ministry of Health. But who will be charged after the lifting of immunity is not yet known. The opposition has called for the government to resign and for new elections to be held. ND has been governing Greece since 2019.
