Now, newly activated UI elements have appeared, and it has been revealed that Google's feature will be called Tap to Share. This is a fairly clear name and likely much easier to understand than NameDrop, a name that suggests sharing contacts but can also be used for sharing files, making that name much less appropriate.

For the feature to enable sending contacts, photos, videos, links, locations, "and much more," the phone must be unlocked and placed screen-to-screen with the phone being shared with, but with the screens facing up so you can see them. If this doesn't work, Google suggests holding the phones back-to-back. This is necessary because the placement of NFC chips on Android phones is not standardized.

It is still unclear when this sharing feature will be introduced. When it arrives, it is assumed it might be exclusive to Google's Pixel phones for a certain period before becoming available on a wider range of Android devices, as Google typically does. It may arrive as part of Android 17.
