In the new version of the series, titled "Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair," Per Sullivan is the only original cast member who will not reprise his role. Instead, the character of Dewey will be portrayed by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
Actress Jane Kaczmarek, who played his mother Lois in the original series, stated in an interview with The Guardian that Per Sullivan is fully dedicated to his education.
"He's studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him a lot of money to return, and he simply said, 'No, thank you,'" revealed Kaczmarek.
The reboot's plot follows Malcolm as he gets entangled in family dynamics again after his parents, Hal and Lois, demand his presence at their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
The role of Malcolm will once again be played by Frankie Muniz, while Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield return as his brothers Francis and Reese. Emy Coligado also reprises her role as Francis's wife, Piama.
The new cast also includes Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as the youngest siblings Jamie and Kelly, while Keeley Karsten portrays Malcolm's daughter Leah, and Kiana Madeira plays his girlfriend Tristan.
The premiere of "Life's Still Unfair" is scheduled for April 10 on Hulu and Disney+ for subscribers in the United States, as well as on Disney+ for the global market.
