Citroën is celebrating the 30th birthday of the practical Berlingo model, the distant successor to Citroën's humble and tireless "workhorses" whose (beloved van bodies for transporting goods by farmers and merchants) were based on the passenger models 2CV, Dyane 6, and Visa. Primarily conceived as a light commercial vehicle with two seats and a separate cargo area behind metal panels, the first-generation Berlingo, introduced in 1996, was also offered with a glazed body, second-row seats, and sliding doors on both sides, placing it in the passenger car category from the MPV segment (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). Available with four petrol and four diesel engines, along with a redesign in 2002, the first Berlingo lasted until 2008, when the next generation arrived. With the passenger version of the second-generation Berlingo came even more space and comfort in an airy cabin with better sound insulation, and significant improvements were also achieved in the segment related to passenger safety. Petrol engines develop from 98 to 120 hp, and (turbo)diesel powertrain options from 75 to 120 hp. With the second generation, which underwent two refresh treatments, the Berlingo could also be had in a combination powered solely by an electric motor with 67 hp, and battery capacity provided a range of up to 170 kilometers on a single charge. The current (even more comfortable, safer, and equipped) third generation, introduced in 2018, premiered with two body versions, and with the longer body and increased wheelbase (XL), the Berlingo becomes an excellent partner for above-average large families, as with the optional third row of seats, the cabin can now accommodate seven people. In addition to two turbo-petrol engines (110 and 130 hp) and one turbo-diesel engine (130 hp), an electric version remains an option, with its electric motor developing 136 hp. After the redesigned edition in 2024, besides the mentioned electrically powered version with batteries that provide a range of up to 339 kilometers, the Berlingo is offered only in combination with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with two power levels. The weaker version (102 hp) is combined with a manual 6-speed gearbox, and with 130 hp comes an automatic 8-speed gearbox.
