"Ted Lasso" star Nick Mohammed will host the 50th anniversary awards at a glamorous ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, with awards to be presented by Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Williams, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Topping the nominations for the British equivalent of Broadway's Tony Awards, with 11 nods each, are the homegrown hit "Paddington: The Musical" and the acclaimed new staging of Sondheim's dark fairy tale "Into the Woods." Among the acting nominations are Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Paapa Essiedu, Rosamund Pike, Tom Hiddleston, Blanchettโnominated for her role as a vain actress in Chekhov's play "The Seagull"โand Cranston for his role as a troubled family patriarch in Miller's drama "All My Sons." In the category of Best Actor in a Musical, there is also a joint nomination for James Hameed and Arti Shah, who together portray the titular bear in "Paddington." Hameed provides the voice and operates the puppet remotely, while Shah wears the bear costume on stage. During the ceremony, numbers from the nominated musicals will be performed, as well as special performances marking two significant anniversaries: 40 years since the premiere of Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" and 20 years of the popular musical "Wicked" on the West End. Theatre diva Elaine Paige, known for leading roles in hit musicals such as "Cats," "Evita," "Sunset Boulevard," and "Piaf," will receive this year's Special Award. The Olivier Awards were established in 1976 and named after the late actor and director Laurence Olivier. The winners are chosen by voting panels composed of theatre professionals and theatregoers.
