Britney Spears' ex-husband, through his lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan, issued a statement on Monday regarding reports that Spears has checked into rehab after being detained last month for driving under the influence.
"Kevin is happy that she has checked into rehab and that, if she needs help, she has support and is receiving it. He is also pleased that this appears to be a decision she made on her own, not something imposed on her," said Kevin Federline's lawyer.
According to a source for Page Six, Spears' decision to seek help for addiction was entirely her personal choice, which her representative had previously confirmed.
"This isn't about one specific thing; it has a dual purpose. It's about Britney putting her mental health first and taking some time for herself to focus on the things that are important to her. She is dedicated to working on her health. This is something she really wants to do for herself. This was her own decision," the source stated.
Federline, who was married to Spears from 2004 to 2007, shares two sons with the singer: 20-year-old Sean Preston and 19-year-old Jayden James.
The source notes that the singer's family supports her decision to enter rehab.
"Everyone just wants Britney to be healthy and in a good place, and the fact that this was her decision only proves how committed she is to her own recovery and getting back on solid ground," the source said.
Recall that Spears was detained on March 4 after police observed her swerving uncontrollably between lanes. During the detention, an unknown substance was allegedly found in her car, and she is believed to have been under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs.
Following that incident, Spears has been spending time with her sons, and last month she posted photos with Sean Preston and Jayden James during a yacht vacation.
Additional attention was drawn by a recent change on her older son's social media. Sean added his mother's surname to his Instagram profile while omitting his father's. He now uses the pseudonym "Sean P Spears," whereas he was previously known as "Sean Preston."
