Zarif has been the face of Iran's negotiations with the U.S. and other countries regarding Iran's nuclear program for years. In the American magazine Foreign Affairs, he outlined a plan according to which Iran could end the war with the U.S. and Israel on terms favorable to Tehran. Iran should, accordingly, offer limitations on its nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of all sanctions. He also believes that his country should be prepared to accept a mutual non-aggression pact with the United States, in which both countries would promise not to attack each other in the future. His proposal also includes offering economic interaction with America, which would be beneficial for both the American and Iranian people. "All these outcomes would allow Iranian officials to focus less on protecting the country from foreign enemies and more on improving the lives of their people within the country. In other words, Tehran could secure a new, brilliant future that Iranians deserve," Zarif believes. However, somewhat later, he said he is conflicted about publishing his peace plan. "As an Iranian, I am outraged by the reckless aggression and harsh insults of Donald Trump, but at the same time proud of our armed forces and resilient people, I am conflicted about publishing this peace plan in Foreign Affairs. Nevertheless, I am convinced that the war must end under conditions that align with Iran's national interests," he stated.
