According to the state agency RIA, Popov was found guilty of accepting bribes, fraud, forging official documents, abuse of position, and illegal possession of weapons. However, he did not plead guilty during the proceedings. Prosecutors allege that Popov, who was previously responsible for the development and operation of the "Patriotic Park" of the Russian Ministry of Defense, along with other officials, participated in abuses and embezzlement of funds allocated for the project. It is reportedly about more than 30 million rubles, which, according to the indictment, were also used for private purposes, including the construction of facilities on property associated with his son. In the same case, Popov's associates, Vladimir Shesterov and Vyacheslav Akhmedov, previously reached agreements with the prosecution. Popov was additionally stripped of his rank as a retired general.
