When there are hundreds of horsepower under the hood and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes only a few seconds, the only thing separating the driver from the "ditch" are four small contact patches with the asphalt. Audi Sport and Pirelli know this well, and their latest collaboration is focused precisely on that. It involves the new Pirelli P Zero R tires, specifically designed for the redesigned Audi RS3 and Audi RS5 to extract the maximum performance from these vehicles.
The main task for the engineers was to create a product that approximates the characteristics of semi-slick tires like the P Zero Trofeo R, while remaining suitable for everyday use. This is the eternal compromise: track tires typically "harden" in the rain and wear out quickly, while regular road tires "float" under extreme loads. In Breuberg, Germany, where Pirelli's research and development center is located, along with the office in Milan, they found the golden mean.
Special attention was paid to the tire's ability to provide stable braking. The new compound mix allows for a high level of grip even at low temperatures, which is crucial for safety on public roads. For RS models, where power and mass demand precise control, this means shorter braking distances and predictable behavior in corners.
The situation with the Audi RS5 (2026) proved even more complex. It is the first plug-in hybrid in the RS lineup, meaning it has become heavier due to the battery and electric motor. The significant mass and instant torque pose a real test for tire construction. To prevent the tires from "flexing" under load, Pirelli developed a reinforced structure with a high load index. This allows for maintaining steering precision even when the heavy hybrid enters a sharp corner at high speed.
Final tuning was carried out at the Nรผrburgring and in test centers in Spain. Tests confirmed that the P Zero R tire is not only fast but also comfortable. This tire does not turn driving into a challenge for the spine on every bump, which is important for those who use the RS as their primary vehicle. As a result, owners of the RS3 and RS5 models get technologies from the world of motorsport packaged in a civilian format, where every millimeter of the tread works for stability.
