In a recent post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, a source known as "Fixed Focus Digital" stated that the standard iPhone 18 will not see significant design changes, confirming rumors of a minor upgrade. The standard iPhone 18 model will have almost no changes to its external design, aside from potential minor size adjustments. In another post, the source claims that Apple still plans to release a second-generation iPhone Air model. "Air 2 will continue with its standard product iteration cycle. No matter how poor the sales are, Apple will grit its teeth and persist for at least two generations," the source stated. Sales of the iPhone Air have reportedly plummeted since its launch in September 2025. A KeyBanc Capital Markets investor survey showed "virtually no demand" for the device. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that suppliers are expected to reduce capacity by over 80% between the launch and the first quarter of 2026. Luxshare stopped producing the iPhone Air in October, and Foxconn was expected to end production by the end of December, leaving the device believed to be completely out of production. Apple's iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 15 Plus performed similarly poorly and lasted only two generations. According to The Information, Apple is now considering a redesign of the iPhone Air to add a second rear camera and address one of the main criticisms of the current model. One report suggests the second camera could be a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens. Previous reports also indicated that Apple's work on the second-generation model focuses on reducing weight, adding vapor chamber cooling, and increasing battery capacity, along with a thinner Face ID module and the integration of A20 and C2 chips. The standard iPhone 18 is expected to be a minor upgrade, adding Apple's A20 and C2 chips, 12GB of memory, a 24-megapixel front camera, and a simplified camera control button. Apple is believed to be planning to abandon its long-established annual September release cycle with the iPhone 18 family, splitting the lineup into two parts. Apple's iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable iPhone are expected in the fall of 2026, while the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 will likely arrive in the spring of 2027. A report published by Nikkei Asia confirms the strategy and notes that the goal is to optimize resources and maximize revenue from premium models.
