A total of 52 senators voted "yes," while 47 senators voted "no." Only one Republican senator voted "yes," that being Rand Paul. On the other hand, Democrat John Fetterman voted "no" on this resolution.
Senator Tammy Duckworth called for a Senate vote to end what she described as Trump's unnecessary and costly war of choice against Iran. "The American people do not want more expenses, unchecked lies, and chaos. The Senate must act," she added.
Although votes on war powers resolutions have remained unchanged, some Republicans express concern over Trump's rhetoric regarding the conflict and seek a swift end to the fighting. Senator Lisa Murkowski, who voted against Duckworth's resolution, is working with other Republicans in the Senate on a resolution that would authorize military force against Iran beyond the 60- to 90-day period stipulated by the 1973 War Powers Act for responding to national security threats without congressional approval.
These Republican lawmakers believe Congress will have to intervene to approve the war if it continues through the end of May, before they agree to approve Trump's request for additional military funding. Senator John Curtis said he will not support any funding until the Trump administration is clearer about its objectives. He called for an end to the conflict when it reaches 60 days without congressional approval, citing the War Powers Act.
The Utah Republican warned on Monday against deploying a large contingent of ground troops to Iran, stating it is not a place he would want to go.
Democrats in both chambers have forced repeated votes on war powers for Iran in an attempt to pressure Republicans as the conflict drags on and fuel prices rise. Democrats in the House of Representatives plan to demand a vote this week on legislation to end the conflict. Although party leaders expected the vote to take place once they secure enough support for passage, Representative Greg Meeks, a Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, told The Hill that he is ready to pressure any undecided Republican.
"I can't wait any longer to see what they will do. Let them vote, and then we'll see what happens," Meeks said.
A previous war powers vote in the House faced opposition from four Democrats. Three of them—Representatives Greg Landsman, Juan Vargas, and Henry Cuellar—are expected to support Meeks' resolution. The vote is also expected to gain support from Representatives Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson, who backed the previous resolution, which was co-sponsored by Massie.
