This decision immediately drew a reaction from the European Commission, which labeled the measure as discriminatory and contrary to EU single market rules. However, Prime Minister Robert Fico does not plan to back down, stating that the measure is necessary due to the energy crisis and high oil prices. The Slovak government explains that the goal is to protect domestic fuel supplies and prevent mass refueling by drivers from neighboring countries, which could lead to shortages in the local market. In practice, this means that if you plan to travel through Slovakia, for the same tank of diesel at some gas stations, you may pay almost double what local drivers pay. Slovaks pay an average of 1.57 euros per liter, while foreigners, depending on the gas station, face prices above two euros. Prime Minister Fico emphasized that the higher prices are introduced temporarily, initially for 30 days, but added that an extension is not excluded if the energy situation in the country remains critical. At the same time, he suggested that the European Commission pressure Ukraine to resume the transport of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which would reduce the need for this exceptional measure in Slovakia. The European Commission, on the other hand, warns that such a practice may be contrary to EU laws and that proceedings against Slovakia are expected if the measure continues. For now, the government in Bratislava maintains its stance that protecting domestic consumers and strategic fuel reserves is a priority. This move by Slovakia is reminiscent of the growing tensions in Europe regarding energy resources, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine and global supply chain disruptions. While domestic drivers benefit from lower prices, foreign drivers must be prepared for significantly more expensive fuel if they wish to travel through this country.

If you are driving through Slovakia, try to avoid refueling; the price for foreigners is not the same as for locals.
If you are planning a trip through Slovakia, be prepared to pay much more for the same amount of fuel at some gas stations than local drivers. Slovakia introduced a special diesel price regime for drivers with foreign license plates effective March 18.
