Every year on April 2nd, ceremonies are held in Shkodër, both state and local, where politicians from both sides lay wreaths in honor of the four martyrs who fell in 1991. But what happened on April 2nd, just two days after the elections of May 31, 1991, in Shkodër? The first pluralistic elections on March 31, 1991, were won by the Labor Party. However, this result was met with great disappointment and revolt, especially in Shkodër, the northern capital and one of the cities most affected by the dictatorship during the half-century-long single-party regime. Convinced that the elections had been manipulated by the Labor Party and the State Security, supporters of the Democratic Party decided to hold a protest on April 2nd in the square in front of the Labor Party Committee in Shkodër. The authorities took strong measures, fearing an escalation of the situation. The Minister of Interior at that time was the current Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Gramoz Ruçi. The protest began around 8:00 AM. The situation escalated immediately, leading to clashes between protesters and special forces. At 8:15 AM, the death of the first protester, Bujar Bishanaku, was reported. Meanwhile, at 8:45 AM, Nazmi Kryeziu and Arben Broci were killed, the latter being a well-known figure of the student movement that brought about pluralism. Then, around 10:00 AM, Besnik Ceka was also shot dead. Snipers positioned on the terrace of the Labor Party Committee in Shkodër were held responsible for these killings. The number of injured is believed to have been 58.
