A major fire has engulfed one of Australia's two main oil refineries, raising concerns about fuel supply security. The incident involves Viva Energy's refinery in Geelong, Victoria, which processes around 120,000 barrels of oil per day and produces about 50% of the region's fuel and 10% nationally.
According to authorities, Victoria's Fire Services intervened on Wednesday evening following reports of explosions and large flames at the facility. Although the fire has not been fully extinguished, it is under control, and emergency teams continue working to completely isolate it.
This refinery is one of two main plants in the country that process fuel for the domestic market, alongside another in Brisbane, making the incident even more critical for the nation's energy infrastructure.
