The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has submitted an official request to the Administrative Court for the live broadcasting of court sessions.
In the request, Veliaj argues that the principle of judicial transparency must be guaranteed in a real and effective manner, by allowing the live broadcast of sessions to the public. According to him, the current limitation on physically attending sessions does not meet the transparency standard required by law.
One of the main arguments relates to the practice of the Constitutional Court of Albania, which already broadcasts public sessions live, setting a standard for ensuring transparency and citizens' access to justice. According to Veliaj, this practice should serve as a model for all courts, as it demonstrates that live broadcasting is fully compatible with the solemnity and normal conduct of judicial proceedings. It is also an obligation to the public and those who have trusted and voted for Veliaj three times in a row, to learn in real time every fact and truth about him.
He emphasizes that, due to his public function, the high public interest the case carries, and the numerous interested parties, applying a more restrictive standard by other courts would violate the public's right to follow the development of the case, undermine public trust, and compromise the objectives of these proceedings.
