A shocking incident has been uncovered in France, where a 9-year-old boy was found alive after spending about a year locked in a van by his father in the village of Hagenbach. The case came to light after neighbors alerted the police about the sound of a child coming from the vehicle. Law enforcement intervened and forcibly opened the van, finding the child in a severe state: malnourished, undressed, covered with a blanket, and placed among trash. According to prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, the boy was in poor physical condition and could no longer walk due to prolonged isolation. Investigations revealed that the child had been locked up since November 2024, when he was only 7 years old. The father claimed he did this to protect him, as his partner wanted to send him to a psychiatric institution. However, authorities emphasized that there is no evidence the child had such issues and that he had been performing well in school. Media reports indicate that neighbors had noticed the boy's sudden disappearance at the end of 2024, while family members had said he was placed in custody. Some residents stated they had heard noises from the van but were told they came from a cat. The father's partner has denied any knowledge of the child's presence in the van, but the prosecution has charged her with "failure to assist a minor in danger" and "failure to report the mistreatment of a minor." The father has been released under conditional liberty, while the victim's 12-year-old sister and his partner's 10-year-old daughter have been placed under the care of social services. Authorities are also investigating whether other individuals were aware of the situation. According to the prosecution, friends and family had believed the boy was in a psychiatric institution, while teachers were told he had transferred to another school. The names of the victim and family members have not been made public. Investigations into this severe case of abuse and isolation of a minor are ongoing.
