An Albanian citizen, who was illegally in the United Kingdom, has been arrested by British authorities after being discovered hiding in the attic of a house used for cannabis cultivation. The incident dates back to February, when police intervened at a property on Leopold Street in the Jarrow area of South Tyneside. During the inspection, officers discovered 158 cannabis plants being cultivated in four separate rooms within the residence. According to data presented at Newcastle Crown Court, the illegal production could have reached a market value of up to ยฃ39,000. Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw stated that the arrested individual, Ramazan Lami, had no criminal record but also did not have the right to remain in British territory, as reported by local media. Lami himself has admitted involvement in cannabis cultivation, while the hearing emphasized that he played the role of the "gardener" in this illegal activity. On the other hand, defense lawyer Jason Smith argued that his client had entered Britain illegally after being promised a better life, but the reality turned out to be quite different. According to the defense, Lami was hiding in the attic and claimed he had only been there for a few hours before being discovered by police. He described his time in pre-trial detention as extremely difficult, and he is expected to be deported voluntarily.
