Kharrazi was known in Iran's political scene as a reformist politician, head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, and an advisor to former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He served as Iran's Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2005. The reformist-leaning Iranian news site Jamaran had reported on April 1 that Kamal Kharrazi was "severely injured and hospitalized" after an attack that, according to the report, also killed his wife. Jamaran had reported that Kharrazi's home in Tehran was targeted.
