Democrat has been accused by four women of inappropriate behavior, ranging from sexual harassment to allegations of rape. Swalwell has categorically denied the accusations, stating he will defend himself "with facts," writes the BBC.

In a response on social media X, he stated: "I am suspending my campaign for governor. To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for the lapses in judgment I have made in the past. I will fight the serious and false accusations that have been madeโ€”but this is my fight, not that of a campaign."

His decision comes just weeks before the June 2 primary elections, where he was considered one of the leading candidates to replace the outgoing governor, Gavin Newsom.

The accusations first emerged in the media, where a former employee claimed that Swalwell had made inappropriate comments and messages toward her, as well as raised suspicions about an incident in 2019. Subsequently, three other women came forward with similar allegations.

Following the publication of the accusations, Swalwell lost the support of key Democratic figures, including Adam Schiff and Hakeem Jeffries.

However, he maintained his innocence: "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public and have always defended women. I will defend myself and, when necessary, take legal action."
