A major political development has shaken Romania on Wednesday. Seven ministers from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) have resigned after the party decided to withdraw its support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, paving the way for a new government crisis.

According to local media, the resignations were submitted on Thursday at Victoria Palace, the seat of the Romanian government, immediately following the PSD's political decision to distance itself from the head of the executive. In an official statement, the party made it clear that this is the formal step sealing the split with the prime minister.

"The resignations represent the political act through which the decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is formalized," the PSD's response stated.

However, the move does not mean a total institutional blockade. The Social Democrats have left the door open for cooperation: until a new government is formed, they will continue to provide parliamentary support for the approval of key laws, especially for projects funded by European Union funds.

Meanwhile, on the political scene, a minority government is being openly discussed as the next solution, at a time when the country is facing a new wave of political tension.

This crisis did not come without warning. On April 20, the PSD had publicly announced its decision to withdraw support for Bolojan, leading to the latest developments.

It is worth recalling that Ilie Bolojan took over the leadership of the government in June 2025 after securing a vote of confidence in Parliament, but now faces a serious challenge to remain at the helm of the country.
