The BBC is cutting up to 2,000 jobs in one of the biggest restructurings for the British public broadcaster in a decade. Staff were informed of the changes at an all-staff meeting on Wednesday, with the cuts affecting around 10% of the organisation's 21,500 employees. The reductions come ahead of the appointment of former Google executive Matt Brittin as chief executive next month. This is the largest job cut since 2011. In February, the BBC announced a ยฃ600 million cost-cutting plan, warning it would lead to job losses and the discontinuation of some programmes. Outgoing director-general Tim Davie said at the time that the organisation would need to reduce its annual operating costs, which are around ยฃ6 billion, by 10% over the next three years. Davie left the BBC on April 2 after announcing his resignation in November following backlash over coverage of issues involving Donald Trump, Gaza, and transgender rights. Interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies, who is leading the all-staff meeting, will remain in charge until Brittin arrives on May 18. The BBC is also in talks with the government to renew its royal charter, which expires at the end of next year, including its funding mechanism through the licence fee. The licence fee increased on April 1, in line with inflation, from ยฃ174.50 to ยฃ180 per year. The BBC collected ยฃ3.8 billion from this fee last year from 23.8 million households, with an additional ยฃ2 billion coming from commercial activities and grants. However, the number of households paying the licence fee has fallen by 300,000 year-on-year, as fee avoidance rises and more viewers switch exclusively to competing digital platforms like Netflix and Disney. In February, Davie said the BBC was "holding its own" despite challenges posed by the growth of streaming services and the influence of YouTube. Last year, Ofcom, the media regulator, warned that public service television, which includes the BBC, ITV, and Channels 4 and 5, was becoming an "endangered species" in the era of rapid streaming growth.
