Prime Minister Edi Rama is participating in the "Defense of Democracy" summit organized by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This summit in Barcelona has gathered global left-wing leaders with the aim of mobilizing leftist movements against the far right. Rama also shared moments from his meeting with his counterpart Sánchez, writing, "Barcelona, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, a wise and courageous leader and a dear friend with whom it is a privilege to converse." Reuters reports that these meetings come at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump’s abrupt cuts to humanitarian aid, military interventions, and threats to withdraw from NATO have shaken the status quo of international relations and prompted a reassessment of global alliances. Spurred as a "wake-up call" for European socialists following the rise of the far right in the 2024 EU elections, the goal of the so-called "Global Progressive Mobilization" is to mobilize supporters of leftist ideas, culminating in a declaration for joint action on objectives ranging from defending democracy to the green transition. The "In Defense of Democracy" summit is organized by the Spanish government and is the fourth edition launched by Lula da Silva and Sánchez in 2024, featuring 3,000 attendees, including current and former state leaders, around 400 mayors, unions, activists, and political parties. Both leaders are vocal critics of the Trump administration, with Sánchez being particularly direct about the conflict in Iran, and both face growing challenges from the far right in upcoming electoral races. The far right in Europe lost one of its biggest supporters with the defeat of Hungary’s nationalist leader Viktor Orbán in Sunday’s elections. Sánchez welcomed this, saying, "The wave can be stopped, and Hungary proves it."
