The debate over the use of the Albanian language in state institutions has escalated following a statement by PS MP Marjana Koรงeku, who expressed her refusal to speak in the standard language and prefers the Gheg dialect. The reaction came from former PD MP Edmond Spaho, who used harsh tones and critical language regarding her statement. Spaho described the MP's stance as unacceptable for a public official, emphasizing that the standard language is a significant national achievement and cannot be questioned in state institutions. He recalled that the Albanian language standard was established in 1972 by a broad scientific congress involving scholars from Albania, Kosovo, and Macedonia, considering it a key element for national unification. In his response, Spaho stressed that no one denies the value of Gheg or other dialects, but in his view, the use of the standard language in official functions is essential for cohesion and institutional functioning.
