Criticisms that the powers of local government are being usurped by the Territorial Reform prompted Minister Ervin Demo to respond today after the government meeting. Demo stated that this reform must ensure the strengthening of municipalities and the improvement of their services.

"First, I am glad that this process has begun. We have been interested in this process starting much earlier. The opinions of all actors, and not only them, should be included, and they should present their positions regarding the reform and what has been observed over the past 10 years.

There is much to discuss regarding the issues raised by the mayor of Lezhë. The commission is there to address several elements related to the functions of municipalities. It is understood that the central government will not always agree with the municipalities; that is normal.

What we must ensure is that municipalities, with what they have—whether delegated competencies or those derived from the law—become stronger and provide better services in the territory. I believe we will hear from many mayors and other actors in the territory who may have different positions on the reform or its elements," Demo said./ Top Channel
