Frank Watrous Hamilton's son is accusing Columbia University psychiatry professor Maria Karagiorgou of defrauding his father, taking $1.3 million from him to buy a house in Greece. According to the lawsuit filed against the professor in Manhattan court, the 72-year-old Hamilton was vulnerable after a stroke in 2018, "which had a debilitating effect on his mental and physical health." Although it is unclear how Maria Karagiorgou met Hamilton, his son accuses her of understanding that "he was a weak, disoriented, and elderly man" before initiating an intimate relationship when they met in 2021 or 2022. "Dr. Karagiorgou integrated herself into Hamilton's life to exploit his vulnerable state, gain his trust, and manipulate him, with the aim of taking his assets for her own benefit," claims the family of the 72-year-old. Hamilton, a father of two, had a nearly 50-year career on Wall Street and served as an executive at the financial services firm Promontory Interfinancial Network, which later became known as IntraFi. The alleged "trap" of the age difference was set, according to the family of the 72-year-old, by Karagiorgou, then 57, who flew from New York to Florida to spend holidays and her two birthdays with him. During some of these social gatherings, Hamilton referred to Karagiorgou as his fiancรฉe or wife. At the same time, the family of the 72-year-old claims, the suspect had her eye on a house in Athens and persistently asked Hamilton to pay the bill. Within a few months, Hamilton first sent $100,000 on April 4, 2022, and then $1.2 million on May 18, 2022, for the purchase of the $1.3 million house in the Greek capital. According to the lawsuit, although there was an unwritten agreement to buy the house in both their names, Karagiorgou was listed as the sole owner before she subsequently cut off contact with Hamilton. The bank transfers were discovered by a Hamilton family lawyer after the 72-year-old's death on January 26, 2025.
