One of the oldest mysteries in the USA, the disappearance of the Martin family in 1958, has been solved after nearly seven decades, thanks to advances in DNA technology and a lengthy investigation. "The Mirror" reports that the family vanished in December 1958 while traveling to pick up a Christmas tree. Their disappearance was reported on December 9th after the parents failed to show up for work, immediately raising alarm with authorities. Several months later, the bodies of two girls, Virginia and Susan Martin, were found downstream in the Columbia River in Oregon. However, for decades, the fate of the parents, Kenneth and Barbara Martin, as well as their eldest daughter, Barbara (Barbie), remained a mystery. Recently, their remains have been identified after a Ford-type car believed to belong to the family was discovered in the Columbia River in 2024 by independent researcher Archer Mayo. DNA analyses, conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office in collaboration with the forensic genetics laboratory Ortham Inc, confirmed the victims' identities. Authorities emphasized that the multi-year investigation found no evidence of a crime, supporting the initial theory that the family may have suffered a fatal accident by driving into the river. However, suspicions have persisted over the years. The family's eldest son, Donald Martin, who was 28 at the time, expressed belief that the incident was not accidental. A 1959 autopsy report also mentioned a possible gunshot wound to the head of one of the girls, but this was not confirmed due to body decomposition. No suspect was ever identified. The resolution of this case has been met with relief by the community and relatives. "Many people worked for years to find and identify the Martin family, and we are proud to have helped," said Kristen Mittelman, Director of Development, for the KATU network. "A mystery like this weighs not only on the family but on the entire community, and we hope this gives many people the closure they deserve." This case is considered a significant example of the role modern technologies play in uncovering old events and providing answers to families after decades of uncertainty. DNA samples from human remains dating back to the 1950s were examined in an effort to uncover the fate of a family later found in the same river with the vehicle they were traveling in.
