A project by composer Sir Karl Jenkins, reflecting the horror and tragedy of the war in Kosovo during 1998-1999, has taken first place in the world's largest annual classical music poll. "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" was declared the most popular work in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2026, following nearly 90,000 votes from the public. The result was announced by presenter Dan Walker.
The 82-year-old composer described this achievement as a "great pleasure," becoming the first living composer to reach the top spot in this poll. In an interview with BBC Radio Wales, he humorously remarked, "It's better to receive the award while you're alive, rather than after you've died." This choral work, created in 2000 and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo War, reflects the pain and devastation left behind in Kosovo by the conflict caused by Serbia.
