The national broadcasters of Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia will not air the Eurovision Song Contest, following a decision to boycott the event due to Israel's participation. Slovenian broadcaster RTV confirmed on Thursday that it would instead broadcast a series of films about Palestine, reports The Guardian. Spain's RTVE also reiterated its decision not to broadcast Eurovision, for the first time since the country began participating in 1961. Ireland's public broadcaster, RTร, announced last December that it would neither broadcast nor participate in the event. The Netherlands and Iceland withdrew last December, but the contest will be aired by their respective national broadcasters, NPO and RรV. This year's contest, the 70th Eurovision with 35 participating countries, will be held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, from May 12 to 16. The withdrawals were triggered by the decision of the organizing body, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), to allow Israel to participate despite strong criticism over the war in the Gaza Strip.
