The opposition party "The Left" has accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government of fueling the war in Iran through arms exports to Israel. "The profit interests of the military-industrial complex never serve the cause of peace, neither in the Middle East nor elsewhere. On the contrary, they incite wars that claim countless lives and can cost entire nations their economic prosperity," said Ulrich Thoden, a member of parliament from "The Left," who called for an immediate and complete halt to arms exports to Israel. As reported by the German news agency (dpa), citing the Ministry of Economy, following a parliamentary inquiry by Thoden, although the German constitution prohibits arms exports to war zones, the government authorized arms shipments to Israel during the first weeks of the war in Iran. Between February 28 and March 27, Berlin gave the green light for arms exports to Israel worth 6.6 million euros. Germany has been a strong ally of Israel, and government officials have consistently emphasized that the country bears a special responsibility for Israel's security due to its Nazi past.
