A month-long honeymoon in the Maldives turned into a nightmare for a newlywed couple, with the groom fighting for his life after a shark attack. The man, identified as a Spanish gynecologist originally from Alicante by the Spanish newspaper El Periodico Mediterraneo. Media reported that he had married his wife, Ana, and was heading to the Indian Ocean paradise for their first vacation as a married couple.

On Monday afternoon, the newlyweds along with others entered the water near the Kooddoo fish processing plant, an area known for shark activity. The location of the attack is famous for large schools of reef sharks, although the involvement of a bull shark has not been ruled out.

Local reports confirm that the Kooddoo facility had not discharged fish waste for about a week, with a source stating: "The sharks were likely in a state of high hunger and anticipation." "When the group entered, the mere intrusion may have triggered an aggressive reaction."

El Periodico Mediterraneo, citing a source close to Ana's family, said: "With one bite, it took all the flesh from her husband's knee down his leg." The man lost a significant amount of blood and is in intensive care. The agency reported that an official complaint has already been filed against the company that organized their group tour, accusing it of negligence.
