The case of the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, has been closed at the criminal level, as Spanish authorities have concluded that no criminal liability arises from the accident.

According to the Provincial Court of Zamora, in northwestern Spain, the accident that occurred on July 3, 2025, on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla was caused by a tire blowout on the vehicle.

The luxury Lamborghini, driven by Jota, reportedly veered off the road during an overtaking maneuver, then collided with a road divider and burst into flames.

After a thorough review of the evidence and input from road accident experts, the High Court of Justice of Castile and Leรณn decided not to pursue criminal prosecution.

The criminal case has been closed, but what remains open?

The investigation was closed in November without identifying criminal negligence or third-party fault. However, as noted: The absence of criminal liability does not preclude civil claims. Families may take legal action for compensation if they wish. The two brothers were traveling to Santander, where they were to catch a ferry to the United Kingdom, as Jota was set to return to Liverpool for preseason training.

The Portuguese striker had chosen to travel by car, following medical advice to avoid flying due to a recent lung operation. The tragedy occurred just 11 days after Jota married his partner, Rute Cardozo, in Porto. The funeral for the two brothers was held in Gondomar, attended by the entire Liverpool squad.
